AtlasArena

AtlasArena

AtlasArena is a Wellcome Trust-funded research project that aims to create and deploy climate-driven spatio-temporal disease ecology models that predict the risk of infections to humans from new world Arenaviruses. The platform uses Species Distribution Models (SDMs) to predict the geographical distribution of rodent reservoirs for zoonotic New World Arenaviruses, leveraging occurrence data, bioclimatic, vegetation, and land use datasets.

Climate

Changing climate impacts the dynamics of zoonotic dieases spread. The relationship between climate change and disease transmission is complex and driven by changes in ecological, social and behavioral patterns of both humans and animals.

Virus

The outbreaks of several New World arenaviruses in agricultural settings has been shown to be affected by changes in rodent and human populations.

Human Risk

Predicting the risk of zoonotic transmission of neglected arenaviruses before they infect humans is a big challenge yet clearly an important objective for pandemic preparedness.
